Pergolas are beautiful. They’re also the structure homeowners most often regret, because they expected shade and got stripes. Here’s how to choose between a pergola, a solid patio cover and a louvered roof, starting with the only question that matters: which way does your patio face?
Start with the sun
In Austin the afternoon sun is the problem. A west-facing patio gets direct sun from roughly 2 p.m. until sunset for six months; south-facing patios get it midday. East- and north-facing patios are in shade by afternoon and need much less help.
- West or south facing: you need real shade. A solid cover or a louvered roof.
- East or north facing: a pergola may be all you need, and you’ll enjoy the light.
- Pool decks and gardens: often a pergola, where light and openness are the point.
What a pergola actually does
A traditional pergola with rafters spaced a few inches apart blocks a portion of direct sun, shifting through the day, and none of the rain. Tighter rafter spacing or a lattice top increases shade. A retractable fabric canopy adds adjustable shade and light rain protection. Vines add shade over years. A pergola alone on a west-facing Austin patio at 5 p.m. in August will not make the space comfortable.
What a solid cover does
An insulated aluminum or roofed wood cover blocks all direct sun and all rain, and the space beneath it can be screened, fanned and lit into a true outdoor room. It’s the structure that makes a west patio usable. The trade-off: it blocks winter sun too, and it makes the adjacent indoor rooms a bit darker. On a north-facing patio that’s already shaded, a solid cover can feel unnecessary.
What a louvered roof does
Motorized louvers open for sun, angle for shade and close for rain. It’s the one structure that solves the west-patio problem in summer and still lets in winter sun, and it’s priced as the premium option. If your patio faces west and you plan to use it year-round, it’s worth the consultation.
The combination answer
Many of the best backyards use two: a solid cover over the dining and seating area by the house, and a pergola over the grill zone or out by the pool where openness is welcome. Designing both at once keeps the proportions right and the cost lower than two separate projects.
