Pergola or Patio Cover? Be Honest About the Sun.
A pergola is beautiful. It is not a roof.
A traditional pergola blocks a portion of direct sun depending on rafter spacing and orientation, and none of the rain. On a north- or east-facing patio, or over a pool deck where you want light, that’s exactly right. On a west-facing Austin patio at 5 p.m. in August, a pergola alone won’t make the space usable.
So we ask about the sun first. Often the answer is a pergola with a retractable canopy, a lattice top with tighter spacing, or a louvered roof that closes when you need it. Sometimes the honest answer is a solid cover. We’ll tell you which.

A freestanding pergola has nothing to lean on. Footings sized for the soil, posts anchored properly, beams sized for span and knee-braced where needed keep it square through storms. We engineer freestanding pergolas the same way we engineer attached covers, and permit them where the city requires it.

How much does a pergola cost in Austin?

Do I need a permit for a pergola?
Freestanding pergolas under a certain size are often exempt in Austin; attached pergolas and larger structures usually need a permit. HOAs almost always want approval. We check the rules for your address and handle the paperwork.
How much shade does a pergola give?
Typically partial shade, varying through the day. Tighter rafter spacing, lattice or a canopy increases it. For full shade on a west patio, consider a louvered or solid roof.
Wood or aluminum pergola?
Wood for the look and the price; aluminum for zero maintenance around pools and for HOAs that require low-maintenance materials. Aluminum wood-grain finishes are convincing.
Can I add a roof later?
Sometimes a pergola can be retrofitted with a polycarbonate or canopy top. If you think you’ll want full rain protection, it’s more economical to build a solid or louvered cover now.
